Respon Waste is an application designed in conjunction with public landfill bins and beacon technology, to combat the issue of plastic pollution. Beacons are small, wireless transmitters that use low-energy Bluetooth technology to send signals to smart devices within a set radius. The project will insert these beacons into public landfill bins that activate a smart device within a set radius of the bin. The device will then alert the Respon Waste application and collect data regarding the users waste and contributions to plastic pollution on a profile page.

Respon Waste has information and statistics on common landfill waste, decomposition rates, environmentally favourable alternatives, as well as, an awards program to incentivise people to reduce their waste. The application is aimed at re contextualizing the ways in which we use everyday items such as mobile phones and rubbish bins to encourage people to think more responsibly about how they contribute to the earths big issues. This project was undertaken as part of my university studies.
